Policies & Procedures

Loan Policies:

  • Students may check out up to four school library items at a time for a period of two weeks (10 school days).
  • Only students enrolled in the Reading Olympian program may check out the reserved Reading Olympian titles.
  • Students may check out one magazine at a time, and this counts towards the four-item limit. Students may check out magazines for one week.
  • Students may check out e-books a for a period of two weeks, which does not count towards the three-item limit.
  • If a student has an overdue/missing item, he/she may not check out any additional items until the account is clear. Students must bring items into the school library to renew them rather than renewing online or over the phone. Fines stop accruing upon renewal of overdue items.
  • Students may check out books with outstanding fines on accounts; see below for details on clearing school library accounts.

Students doing building activity in libraryOverdue Fees:

  • Overdue items incur a five cents per day fine (per item) for each day that school is open. Weekends, inclement weather days, and holidays are not included in any fine.
  • There is a grace period of 10 days past the due date where, although the fine is building, it is waived. Therefore, the first fine that will require payment is for 55 cents and indicates that the item has been checked out for over 20 days. An additional five cents per day (per item) continues to accumulate until the student returns the item.
  • The maximum overdue fee per item will not exceed $3.00 per item.
  • Fines can be paid for via My School Bucks accounts, by cash, or by checks made payable to SJMS.
  • Librarians will send fine and missing book notices home to parents with report cards. Students should also check their own accounts on a regular basis.

Lost or Damaged Books:

  • School Library staff will charge missing books that have been determined to be lost to the student who checked it out without exceptions.
  • The fee for a missing book varies and is based upon the replacement cost of the book that is indicated in the Destiny (school library catalog) record.
  • Students may pay lost book fees via My School Bucks accounts,  by cash, or by check made payable to SJMS.

SJMS Reading Olympians

The Reading Olympian promotes reading, teamwork, self-confidence, and just plain reading for fun. It doesn’t matter what kind of reader you are; there are books on the list just for you. We encourage all SJMS students to join the Reading Olympian club and take part in the activities. The Olympians will work in teams to collectively read from the list of 30 books between October and March.

There are two levels of competition. All Olympians will compete at the school level competition. From there, the top four scoring teams will participate in the Hanover County Reading Olympians Competition, in which Olympians will compete against other top scoring teams from middle schools in Hanover County. At both the school and county competitions, students will answer questions about the books and teams will earn points for correct answers. Immediately following each competition, we'll hold a fun ceremony, and ALL participants will receive a medal or ribbon for their hard work and dedication to reading.
